You’re helping young people tackle their Goliaths
Young campers attending SU Australia’s ‘Taking on Goliath’ camp had the opportunity to overcome some big physical challenges, while also learning they can overcome the other ‘Goliaths’ in their life with God’s help, says camp director Nik.
“We use the story of David and Goliath to illustrate that God can help us overcome the enormous challenges of this world,” he says.
The bushwalk consists of a three-hour trek up hills, down valleys, across creeks and sandy beaches, while campers carry a large, heavy backpack that includes their tents, sleeping bag, food and cooking gear.
Taking on Goliath was also about coming alongside the young campers and letting them know that God is always there ready to help in times where life’s challenges can seem too great to handle.
“There were certainly moments where the kids felt out of their depth, being away from home for the first time. But the junior leaders did a great job of coming alongside them and helping them to tackle the challenges without taking over the task themselves.
“Our campers were rewarded for their hard work by being immersed in God’s beautiful creation for three days, but they also came away knowing that just as David overcame a challenge with faith, so can we,” Nik says.
As the famous Psalmist says, “I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.”
