Small moments matter @ DCYPHER

Small moments matter @ DCYPHER

In a world where young people face so much pressure to conform or risk being ‘cancelled’, Jesus’ message of unconditional love stands in stark contrast.

It’s this same message that underpins SU ministries like DCYPHER Camp, held at Blue Lagoon in Dodges Ferry, South-West Tasmania.

Now in its fifteenth year, this camp has become a community for young people who may feel overlooked or like outsiders. DCYPHER team director Bryce says it’s a change to come together, enjoy creative challenges, board games, video games, and learn more about Jesus.

We show them they are not alone, and that Jesus loves them all the same,” Bryce says.

This year’s camp was the biggest since 2016 with 29 young people enjoying spontaneous dance parties, laser tag, computer games, bible discussions and more.

DCYPHER gives us the opportunity to meet young people where they’re at, which means so much. Our leaders were amazed at the many theological questions asked – questions the campers had never had the opportunity to ask anyone before.

“It truly is those small moments, those incidental conversations, where we see the biggest impact,” says Bryce.

A former camper himself, Bryce recalls the impact of those moments.

The most important memory I still hold to this day [from SU camps] was a conversation with a leader at meal time. It stands out because the leader focussed on me, and listened with a genuineness that was impossible to fake.

“I remember feeling like someone cared about me, and it’s why I love passing that onto our campers today. It makes a difference.”

Your support does make a difference. Thank you for showing our young people that Jesus’ love is for everyone.
