More than just fun and games
In a quest to create a welcoming space for gaming enthusiasts (and shelter indoors during Melbourne’s harsh winter) SU’s Games Camp was back in full swing this year.
Twenty-two campers and team members headed to Camp Coolamatong in June for a weekend of tabletop and video games, archery, faith discussions, community and much more.
The idea for camp started when co-directors Jesse and Megan, being game-lovers themselves, noticed that the diverse community of gamers seemed to be underserved by traditional Christian camp ministries. So they decided to roll the dice, and Games Camp was born.
“We wanted to create a space not only where campers felt welcome, but a space that was purpose-designed for them,” says Jesse and Megan.
Between sessions of figurine painting, Combat Archery, a Trivia Night, and a Mario Kart tournament, the team made sure to also include space for deep and meaningful conversations about the Gospel.
While the campers were mostly Christian, there were a few non-Christians who came along too, all of whom are keen to return next time.
“We were able to demonstrate to people who have long-felt isolated by Christian ministry that Christians aren’t as weird as they may have expected.”
“There is a huge potential for growth in this ministry and we really hope that it can grow into something bigger than ourselves.”
SU Australia’s Games Camp is just one example of how your involvement – be it through prayers, finances, or time – is helping to spark new ideas to engage young people and give them opportunities to find connection and community as they discover life in God’s big story.
