Canberra kids discover the victory in Jesus

Up to 60 primary-aged children enjoyed learning about the victory they have in Jesus at SUPA Holiday, run over two action-packed days in July in partnership with St Peter’s Anglican Church in Canberra.

St Peter’s Senior Minister, Nick Colyer, who MC’d the event and entertained everyone as Banana Man over the two days, says the program was a great way to engage kids from churchgoing families as well as those who didn’t have a church connection.

“It was incredible to see the kids who brought their non-Christian friends along, and the enthusiasm they had to see their friends come to know Jesus and have their big questions answered,” says Nick.

Activities included lego-building, a SUPA Olympics, colouring in, craft, cooking, songs, and even a little bit of science, which connected with the program’s theme of superheroes and the memory verse.

“But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 15:57

Nick’s wife Sarah was the Bible speaker over the two days, sharing stories and lessons about how Jesus is the ultimate superhero that has already won the victory.

But unlike most superheroes, Jesus doesn’t just come in and save the day and leave, he wants to have a relationship with us.

“We looked at the stories of Zaccheus and Paul specifically to learn about the difference Jesus made in their lives,” says Nick.

Feedback from participants and parents alike was once again overwhelmingly positive.

Making slime and creating superhero capes, the Superhero Olympics, cooking, and Banana Man, all made the children’s list of favourite activities, while ‘learning a new memory verse’ and knowing that Jesus ‘loves us no matter what’ were some of the key lessons learned.

“Jesus is the best superhero” says another of the children who attended.

Parents too were grateful for the program.

“Appreciate the reinforcement of Christian values from a source outside of our family and Church,” shares one parent.

For Nick, the partnership with SU, now in its second year, was also a blessing.

“SU has been really helpful from our perspective at St Peter’s with all the back-end support, the registration process, risk assessment and everything we need to ensure we can deliver a fun, engaging and child-safe experience.

“It gives us the confidence to run events like this,” he says.

Thank you for all you do to support SU ministries in the ACT and around Australia, which makes partnerships with our wonderful church partners like St Peter’s possible. To support this vital work, visit suact.org.au/donate
