Adventure, dragons and Bible stories

SUPA South camp, held during the July school holidays at Camp Orana in Roches Beach, ignited the hearts of children in grades 4-6 with stories from the Bible in the midst of a chilly Tasmanian winter.

SUPA South Director, Sam says the aim of the camp is to encourage children to explore the Bible through four days of action-packed fun.

“The days were filled with games, crafts, Bible sessions, devotions, a scavenger hunt, beach games and more.

“This year we linked our Bible program with the movie, How To Train Your Dragon, and spent time following Jesus’ life from childhood to his resurrection while following the adventures of Hiccup, the protagonist of the movie,” he says.

The enthusiasm and eagerness of the campers to learn was infectious, and they shared their insights through the lively discussion times held during the week as Michael, one of the leaders, helped make connections between the movie and stories from the Bible.

Sam was also encouraged to see his leadership team growing in their own faith and skills.

“Some of our junior leaders stepped up to help share the Bible stories with the campers. We were also supported by previous leaders who, while not able to attend this year, kept the camp in prayer,” says Sam.

“It was a privilege to have three junior leaders participate in the camp and to be able to help support them in developing skills as future leaders.”

For Sam, leading on camps continues to be a labour of love, as he recalls the impact this ministry had on his own life and faith journey as a child.

“I am now in a position where I can use my gifts and experience to provide opportunities for others. There are not a lot of opportunities for students these days to get away on camps and spend time opening the Bible. Camps like this are such a valuable gift.”
