What’s Missing?
There are so many ways to tell God’s big story. Below, Sarah Foley, FDM assistant, Far Southern NSW, describes how a bit of creative thinking can help spread hope and love in the community.
As current SU chaplains, my husband Keith and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to attend our local Community Easter Event. What an ideal time to share the message of Jesus. Schools have Easter hat parades, communities do egg hunts, and yet still many do not know the true reason for this time of the year.
We decided to hold a stall with Easter colouring-in sheets and Hot Cross Buns given out for free to all who came past our stall.
Coles Supermarket generously committed to donate 100 Hot Cross Buns to our cause, however we requested them to leave the cross off the bun. This gave the kids a chance to decorate their own Hot Cross Bun with icing, and gave us the opportunity to talk about the cross and why it’s on the Easter bun.
Kids loved coming to the stall. As they arrived, we asked: “Can you see what’s missing on this Hot Cross Bun?”
Most knew the pattern of the cross was missing, but many didn’t know why the cross was there. As they decorated, we told them about the first Easter, the death of Jesus and His resurrection.
We also utilised a storytelling tool called “Resurrection Eggs.’ A group of teenage girls sat down on our picnic rug and heard the full story of Easter by opening individual eggs with a symbol inside each egg.
We know God led these girls to our site to hear this full story and we will continue to pray for each of them.
One girl courageously came back at the end of the event and said: “I found that story very interesting and I can’t stop thinking about what you said about Jesus, thank you so much for telling me this.”
We continued conversation with her, which led to her asking for a Bible of her own to read.
God is good and we were thankful for the opportunity to serve in the community through our connection with SU Australia.
Thanks for the hot (cross) buns story. Gives ideas.
