The Heart of Gold Make a Difference (MAD) Camp

The Heart of Gold Make a Difference (MAD) Camp encouraged campers in years four to eight to look for the ‘gold’ within themselves while helping others recognise their own worth, empowering them to ‘Make A Difference’ in their communities.

“The chaplains invited children and families from their schools and communities to come along to camp,” explained Victoria’s Field Development Assistant, Narelle.

The relational focus was especially beneficial for many of the children coming from small, rural communities, some of whom had even recently endured floods and fires.

“The purpose of the camp was to help the young people with self-discovery and activities that built trust, connections and relationships.”

Chaplains and leaders guided the children through activities that developed their confidence while encouraging teamwork to overcome fears.

Notable activities included a night walk up a dark tower and riding a cage 800 metres down a mine.

“They recognised that together, they could do these sorts of things,” remarked Narelle.

Alongside all the excitement, a journey walk in the outdoor spaces provided moments of reflection. Activities such as blowing bubbles to symbolically release worries and laying still in a hammock while the campers thought about who supports them prompted considerations of others facing hardships.

“The outdoor space was quite a powerful activity.”

Many new friendships were formed, including one child who initially felt unsettled but after experiencing kindness and acceptance from the other campers, began to feel more at ease.

Since returning home, many of the campers’ chaplains and teachers have noticed positive changes in their behaviour and confidence.

“They are a lot more outgoing and willing to try new things.”

Thanks to your support, more children, young people and their families are experiencing a glimpse into Christian community. To continue this important work, please visit su.org.au/donate
