Isla finds freedom on Autumn CHIC
Every child and young person matters deeply to God.
In a world where a person’s value can too often be determined by their looks, achievements or social IQ, God’s unconditional love stands in stark contrast.
This message certainly rang true at Autumn CHIC (Choices, Hopes, Identity, Connections), held at Glen Echo Farm in Albany.
For first-time camper Isla*, who has a variety of special needs, including autism and social anxiety, it was this unconditional love she experienced on camp that helped her break free from the lies she once believed about herself, says CHIC Autumn Director Emma.
“The volunteers worked with Isla’s family to ensure she felt safe and at ease during the six days of camp,” Emma says.
Tying in with the camp’s theme of “Free” Camp Speaker Jodie spoke about basing our identity on God’s truth, and how to identify, expose and get rid of the lies we believe that block our relationship with Him.
“One of the junior leaders really connected with Isla, and was able to pray with her, and we saw such a great breakthrough,” says Emma.
Not only did Isla start to see herself through God’s eyes, but she made new friends on camp and had some “amazing God chats” with the leaders.
“Throughout camp, she overcame some big challenges. When she got home, she was brimming with positive stories to tell her mother about the activities and the leaders she met. Her family could see a tangible difference in her,” says Emma.
