Hiking Towards Hope at Bush n Biscuits Easter Camp
On the 15th of March, eleven campers embarked on the annual Bush n Biscuits camp at Cradle Mountain, a collaboration between SU Australia and New Horizons Tasmania. Led by Lorna Wilson, a former SU chaplain, the camp set out to craft transformative experiences for participants through genuine connections and adventure.
Tailored to support individuals with disabilities, the camp provided a platform for attendees to embrace challenges and form bonds together. Against the backdrop of the natural bush setting, the group fostered an environment of trust and support.
Especially touching was the display of selflessness by a first-time hiker with down syndrome, who chose to accompany his less confident friend back down the Cradle Mountain track, forfeiting his own summit experience. Despite facing challenges such as rugged terrain and unpredictable weather, the campers’ resilience and encouragement toward one another echoed throughout the wilderness.
Camps like Bush n Biscuits not only offer individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience adventure and thrive in a supportive environment but also provide a glimpse into the essence of Christian community.
Camp director Lorna Wilson emphasises, “it’s about being present with young people in the moment.”
As the camp concluded, its impact resonated well beyond the mountain. With each step taken and connection forged, Bush n Biscuits continues to enable people from all walks of life to feel respected and valued without judgement.
