God’s in control
If WA’s South West Adventure Camp (SWAC) could be summed up in just one sentence, it would be:
“God’s in control.”
In fact, those are the exact words a junior leader told a hesitant camper during a kayaking activity in the ocean.
At SWAC, students from years 7 to 10 sign up for a jam-packed week of adventure, where comfort zones are safely pushed, yet all exploration exceeds just land and water.
“SWAC’s a place where campers are equipped to journey with Jesus both during and after camp,” explains Dawn House, WA’s Ministry Coordinator.
Whether it’s snorkelling, hiking or mountain biking across rough terrain, all activities have been thoughtfully designed to allow campers to connect with God as creator.
Dawn has found that faith conversations among campers flow naturally when paired with the backdrop of adventure.
One of her favourite moments from camp occurred on a hike with a year 7 boy suffering from chronic health issues. Despite the child’s persistent pain, he encouraged campers that “God’s put him in this place,” and he wants to “share Jesus with others.”
Another highlight unfolded in the forest during a mountain biking activity, where students marvelled at God’s master artistry.
Providing children with experiences to learn resilience in a safe, caring environment boosts confidence and develops a love for God that lasts well beyond the campsite.
“Many campers want to return as junior leaders, and one’s even started running a Bible study for kids,” Dawn remarks.
While all the thrill at SWAC brings campers closer to faith, it’s God who’s ultimately in control, transforming hearts one adventure at a time.
