From Sales Rep. to Saviour’s Rep

From Sales Rep. to Saviour’s Rep

Matt’s journey to chaplaincy began with an unexpected path, following in his brother’s footsteps as a sales representative. Yet, with each step, he felt increasingly uninspired. Wrestling with his mental health and a sense of unfulfillment, Matt realised he was merely going through the motions of his Christian faith.

This moment of clarity propelled Matt towards ministry, becoming a self-professed Bible nerd, eager to make a difference. Once he discovered the idea of chaplaincy, Matt couldn’t shake the feeling that this was his calling. He made the bold decision to leap into the unknown, resigning from his sales job to pursue chaplaincy instead.

However, the persuasive pleas of his employers convinced him to stay in the role. Matt recognised his knack for customer service, a skill he had honed through building experiences for his customers rather than just making sales. It dawned on Matt that he could mirror the essence of being a Christian representative right where he was.
Intrigued by this prospect, Matt took nonofficial on-the-job training, merging his sales tactics with the art of active listening and understanding. He loved the incognito role of being a kind of mobile chaplain, helping solve people’s problems and being their support system all while selling power tools.

Matt found his ability to build immediate trust, a skill cultivated through wearing branded sales shirts, seamlessly transitioned into creating a warm, welcoming environment for all he encountered as a chaplain. Listening skills became second nature and what initially seemed like stumbling into on-the-job chaplaincy revealed itself as divine preparation.

God had primed Matt for this unique journey of becoming a chaplain right from the very beginning. In the end, Matt’s preparation led him to become a school chaplain, where he now delights in the inquisitive nature of the children he serves.
