From Copper to Chappy
Andy Bruvels SU Chappy: For 19 years, I dedicated my life to being a police officer, split between Victoria and Queensland. However, fate intervened, redirecting my path a few years ago on the Gold Coast, where I unexpectedly found myself behind the wheel of buses. Driving along, I couldn’t help but question, “Is this really it, God?”
Despite my time at Bible College, becoming a church pastor wasn’t in my plans. Yet, a persistent question lingered: “God, is this truly your plan for me?” Divine nudges pushed me towards school chaplaincy, a role I hadn’t seriously considered. Hesitant but guided by people speaking resonant words, I became a chaplain in Blackall, in the Queensland Outback, discovering profound fulfilment in this unexpected calling.
Doubts persisted, yet, God’s blessings exceeded expectations. The initially hesitant Blackall school embraced our presence, and I took on a second school in Tambo, which lacked previous chaplaincy support. Generous funding through SU allowed us to expand to two days a week in Tambo.
God’s favour extended to after-school programs, with over 40 children joining Tambo’s tennis program and a flourishing basketball program in Blackall. Embracing all children, regardless of their school, became a hallmark, including those from St Joseph’s Catholic School.
Amid these successes, a recent encounter underscored the impact of our work. A student confided that he spoke to “the big fella” during a tough time. We were able to unpack that further and he accepted a book from me as a gift. This small yet potent interaction highlighted the truth: it only takes a spark to ignite a fire, showcasing God’s continuous, transformative movement in our lives.
It was wonderful to hear Andy’s story and the impact he is having in Blackall and Tambo State Schools. I began my Chaplaincy Adventures at Blackall SS back in 2010. The town of Blackall has an amazing community, and we loved our time there. Prayers for Favour and blessing on Andy.
I have grandchildren at Tambo School, and spoke with the two policemen at Tambo at the races last year. Great area in central QLD and love having chappies in our schools and love having them talk about Jesus ( which should be encouraged even more). Blessings in Jesus’ mighty name. Gordon.
