Faithful volunteers help high school group rise again… and thrive!
Though it is now behind us, we can all remember ways the pandemic years affected our lives. In the ACT, high school Christian groups suffered, and many ceased running.
What didn’t shut down was the willingness to keep praying for these groups; what didn’t lay dormant were the hearts of volunteers, keen for opportunities to serve students.
One such steadfast SU Australia volunteer sat on the school board at a local ACT high school. Combining her prayers with action, she proposed that the school start a Christian lunchtime group.
“She kept bringing it up at all the board meetings …” says Field Development Manager, Sophie.
While the Principal wasn’t opposed, he did point out that something key was missing. Members. At least two or three interested students were needed to begin.
Sophie rang around local churches, keen to see if anyone knew of any Christian families at the school.
“And then I found one, and then God just blessed it from there,” Sophie reflects.
A group of volunteers gathered to facilitate the group, including another faithful supporter who had been praying for the school for many years.
Sophie describes how the volunteers walked around the school praying for the ministry before it started.
“Beginning in April 2024, the group grew from 2 students to about 15 students dropping in each week,” reflects Sophie.
The lunchtime group is far from sleeping now.
“And another high school group just got permission to go ahead this week as well!” says Sophie.
