Everyone has a seat at the table

Everyone has a seat at the table

The dice is rolled long before it reaches the tables at Victoria’s Games Camp.

For many attendees stepping foot for the first time at Coolamatong, Christianity is an unfamiliar concept. Let alone having a connection to SU Australia.

What they do bring is love for a good board game, and Games Camp matches that passion with the perfect setting to enjoy some friendly competition.

One of the team leaders, Jesse Mallen, explains:

It’s a place where people who love board games can have fun, and discover they have something in common with Christians, who love board games too. That’s the goal.”

Games Camp unites those, Christians and non-Christians alike, who often feel their interests aren’t always represented by mainstream society.

The opportunity for new people to open a pack of cards or play archery outside together creates moments for connection and trust that otherwise would not happen.

“I met a camper last year who came by herself after seeing an ad for Games Camp on Facebook,” Jesse recalls.

“This year she came back and brought some friends with her. She’s even told us that Games Camp is now one of the highlights of her year.”

For another camper who had never heard about Jesus before, the environment allowed him to speak to the leaders about his experiences and learn about their beliefs.

The weekend concluded with a third of the attendees choosing to visit a local church, complete with a warm welcome from the pastors and a delicious morning tea.

Games Camp is a picture of what SU Australia is all about: meeting young people where they are at. Sometimes, that starts with just one roll of the dice.
