An irresistible opportunity to walk and disciple together
About two hours north of Perth, Jurien Bay Beach Mission (JBBM) has been bringing the Good News of Jesus to summer holiday makers for nearly 50 years. We caught up with JBBM Director, Jeremy, to chat about the vision of long-term beach missions.
“I think my first beach mission would have been 1997, when I was 19 years old, and I was taken by my older brother, who had attended previously,” Jeremy recalls.
“I went along not really knowing what to expect, but very quickly [saw] the great community, really inspirational young Christians who were passionate about God, about doing good things in our community. [It] was an exciting thing to be a part of, so I served with that mission for probably four or five years.”
“Scripture Union has a well-articulated vision and mission … our expression of that is two-fold.
“One, is being a Christian presence in the community, now over a consistent period of many years where there’s a second and third generation [of] some of the locals. Being a presence each year to bring joy, love, the light … to try to make the name of Jesus known in [Jurien Bay].
The second dimension of JBBM’s vision is to model Christian community and discipleship within their team.
“[It’s] for us to [be] an example of what it means to live in community as disciples of Jesus. … to have your discipleship and mission inextricably combined … and lived out.”
“Now I have four kids of my own and we just recognise the value that it presents to them in terms of understanding what Christian community mission looks [like] when you can walk and disciple in mission together.
“In terms of 52 weeks of the year, [this one] week most looks like what it means to do mission and discipleship. And you know, that’s an irresistible opportunity for us to keep presenting to our kids and hopefully doing really good things in the community, in Jurien Bay.
“I think it’s an extraordinary experience for what it is to really follow [Jesus] and sets an enormous challenge as to what we do with the other 51 weeks [of the year].”
