A special journey back
Stephanie Sebastian, Tasmania’s Area manager recounts how God moved in the life of a volunteer cook on camp.
Four years ago this month, I attended the Scripture Union Family Camp with my grandson. Despite its label as a “church” camp, I immediately felt a profound sense of home, love, and belonging upon entering. Fast forward four years, and I returned as the camp’s cook—a special journey back to where my walk with Christ began.
I understand that it’s acceptable to make mistakes, seek God’s help and forgiveness, and, above all, recognise that I am loved. This sentiment was shared by fellow campers who expressed their surprise at the kindness and friendliness of Christians. The Holy Spirit’s influence was evident in their experiences.
Led by the Holy Spirit, I volunteered to be the camp cook. Despite the daunting task of preparing meals for around thirty-five people for five days, I felt remarkably at ease throughout the entire process and the campers appreciated the delicious meals, considering them a welcome departure from the ordinary.
The most meaningful moments for me were the morning devotions, worship, and prayer. One morning, a leader drew parallels to the story of the fishes and loaves, prompting me to read John 6:1-13 (NIV).
We experienced an abundance of food, with nothing going to waste. Leftover fresh veggies were transformed into soup for a family, another received meals for their family, and Katie and I used leftover fruit for morning tea. I thank God for providing us with food and allowing us to share leftovers, so please, continue to support Scripture Union. Amen.
