Lego Club builds beyond play
There are few things that trigger as many emotions as a block of Lego. Whether it’s the excitement of the possible builds that await, or the painful memory of stepping on a stray piece with bare feet, Lego sparks imagination and connects stories with our present.
But Lego can be much more than a toy (just ask any adult Lego enthusiast!). Lego creates a fantastic space for children to not only build with their hands, but also with their hearts and minds. And in spaces like ‘Lego Club’, the interactions can be life-changing. Read below as Stephanie Baughman shares how a recent Lego Club interaction built not just a play bridge, but bridges of understanding and insight for a young child…
It is always a joy to build community and share the Gospel with families in such a simple way as Lego. This year’s building challenges involved a holiday scene, an ornate building in Master Chef style (you had to use certain pieces in your building), and a Bridge. Many of the children like sharing about their Lego creations and put so much detail into them.
We always have a Bible time related to the challenge. One precious chat that stands out to me at morning tea this year was with 5-year-old Abby*. After our Bridge building, leader Mark had shared a song and a talk from John 14:1-6 about following Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Abby* was rather concerned for her friends who didn’t follow Jesus. We talked about how that is sad, but one thing we can always do is pray for our friends because God loves them very much and wants them to know Him too.
What a heart already at 5 years old for Jesus and her friends! And it all started with a conversation over Lego.
