Reconciliation Sunday

Reconciliation Sunday

SU joins with Indigenous community for special service.

27 May – 3rd June has long been marked on the Australian calendar as National Reconciliation week, remembering two major moments in the journey to reconciliation, the 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision.

This year, members of SU had the privilege of participating in a Reconciliation Sunday Service, providing a meal for all those attending.

SU Australia’s First Nations Cross Cultural Innovations team were pleased to partner with Restoration Ministries in this event. Culture lead, Joshua Lane, as well as local FDM Brooke Sorbello from Townsville, attended the service, which took place at a small Indigenous church in Townsille’s West End. Numbers swelled as people gathered together from near and far, with one attendee travelling from Melbourne for the event.

“It was a lovely service. A great time to come together in Reconciliation week. We had people from all different backgrounds come together to worship Jesus and share a meal together,” says Joshua, who also led the worship time.

This service is just one area of involvement of the First Nations Cross Cultural Innovations team, who are working nationwide to extend SU’s support of Indigenous and First Nations people.

Though the group is deeply committed to their mission, they would be nothing without the backing of a community of supporters.

“I think it is exciting that we are stepping into new areas of ministry, into new fields, and it is purely the work of the supporters that allow the Cross Cultural and First Nations Innovation Team to step out into these new areas,” reflects Josh.

As with any ministry, relationships are paramount. Keep praying for more and more connections to grow, for God’s unifying love to spread, and for the leaders of tomorrow to emerge to continue to support their communities.

“I see a whole generation of young Indigenous First nations leaders being developed and supported to bring positive changes to their own communities,” says Josh.
