Pilgrims Go Wild!
Ten campers from Grades 10-12 joined SU Australia’s newly launched Cape Wild during the recent Easter school holidays, where they enjoyed hiking through God’s breathtaking creation, while discovering much about their own faith journey too.
Each camper was equipped with a copy of John Bunyan’s classic “The Pilgrim’s Progress” which seemed to take on even greater meaning throughout the 98.7 km trek from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin.
First-time SU volunteer leader Sam was excited to be part of this new camp so he could make a difference in the lives of the young campers as they explored the big questions in life of faith, meaning and purpose.
“It was great to see the enthusiasm from campers as they progressed along the pilgrimage. Camps like this are an incredible way to bring young people together, to forge a sense of community, and to create a space for young lives to disconnect from the screen and connect back to God and His creation,” says Sam.
The campers enjoyed drawing parallels between the story of Christian the Pilgrim to their own lives, and even the more difficult aspects of the hike, says Camp Director, Dawn.
“On the Thursday evening of the hike, we were entering into a day of the hike where the campers didn’t need to carry their belongings. This coincided with us reading through the part of the book where Christian’s burdensome pack is lifted as he comes to the cross.
“This was such a beautiful and powerful reminder that as we come to Jesus, we don’t need to carry all our worries, fears and burdens anymore,” says Dawn.
Through your support for our ministries in the West and across Australia, more young people are encountering the love of Jesus that helps them overcome the heavy burdens the world places on them.
Thank you for giving young people opportunities to discover life, just like Christian did, so that one day they too can find their place in God’s kingdom!
